Lexington Students Take 1st at National Science Bowl
More than 14,000 students competed in Washington, D.C. this year.
LEXINGTON, MA – Look out Einstein, Lexington's got it's own crop of science whizzes. The Lexington High School and Clarke Middle School Science Bowl teams took first place in their respective regional competitions at the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. this year, and the high school team, the Tardigrades, won the national championship.
The team, comprised of Catherine Wang, Derik Kauffman, Joshua Park, Benjamin Choi, and Anka Hu, and they are coached by Nicholas Gould and Robert Pohlman, rallied to a commanding 106-36 victory against the runner-up in the final round. The students received a nine-day, all-expenses paid science trip to Alaska, during which they will take day trips to learn about glaciology, marine and avian biology, geology and plate tectonics.
These trips include exploring the Copper River Delta, hiking the Chugach National Forest, white-water rafting on the Sheridan River and traveling across the Prince William Sound and Orca Inlet. They will also visit Childs Glacier and the Alaska Wildlife Center, a rehabilitation facility for injured and orphaned wildlife.
