LHS Baseball Wins League Opener

Minutemen down Woburn, 16-1; begin defense of their Middlesex League title.

The Lexington High School baseball team picked up right where it left off last year, dominating the Middlesex League, as the Minutemen defeated Woburn High School 16-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

LHS scored five runs in the first two innings and never looked back, running its early season record to 2-0. Woburn didn’t score until pushing an unearned run across in the seventh inning.

The Minutemen defeated non-league foe Lowell High School, 11-8, in extra innings on Friday, and Coach Tom O’Grady said he’s pleased with the way the season has started, his 23rd in the dugout for Lexington.

“It was good," he said. "We’re trying to defend the Middlesex League title we were fortunate enough to win last year. So, it was nice to get the first league win.”

The Minutemen’s offense was firing on all cylinders from the start Tuesday afternoon against the Tanners. A number of players picked up multiple hits, with four of the LHS’ 20 hits coming from Levi Mattingly. He also drove in four runs.

Will Marcal and Charlie Guthrie had three hits apiece, while Connor and Nick Murray and Matt Sharma added two hits each.

Still, the coach admits there’s room for improvement for the Minutemen.

“So far, we’ve been hitting the ball extremely well, and getting good pitching, but we’ve got a long way to go,” O’Grady said. “Hopefully we can keep improving the more we get outside and continue to win some games.”

Senior Jared Bogelin started and picked up the win on the mound for Lexington. He pitched four innings, allowed one and no runs. Fellow senior Jordan Vanderhoff followed with two innings of scoreless relief and Jason Tzannes closed out the game in the seventh.

More wet weather permitting, the Minutemen are scheduled to continue their Midddlesex League schedule this afternoon against Wakefield Memorial High School.
