New England Philharmonic invites 13-year-old Lexington pianist to join them at annual family concert 'The Big Bad Wolf'

The New England Philharmonic invites the 'Big Bad Wolf' to annual family concert featuring Paul Patterson’s ‘Little Red Riding Hood Song Book’ with the Boston City Singers and Khoi Le, of Lexington, winner of 22nd annual Young Artist Competition

Boston — The New England Philharmonic, under the direction of Richard Pittman, will present their annual family concert “The Big Bad Wolf” on December 11 at 3 p.m. at the Tsai Performance Center. The concert’s highlights include Paul Patterson’s ‘Little Red Riding Hood Song Book’ with the Boston City Singers and a performance by the NEP’s 22nd Annual Young Artist Competition winner, Khoi Le, 13, who will perform the first movement of Camille Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor.

The concert will feature William Schuman’s ‘Newsreel in 5 Shots;’ the world premiere of Bernard Hoffer’s

‘Nocturne: The Timber Wolf;’ Andy Vore' strong ‘Big Bad Wolf,’ Paul Patterson’s ‘Little Red Riding Hood Song Book,’ with the Boston City Singers, Joshua DeWitte, Director and narrated by WBZ-TV Meteorologist, Eric Fisher.

NEP’s 22nd Young Artist Competition winner, 13-year-old Lexington native and pianist Khoi Le, will perform will perform the first movement of Camille Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor. “Khoi impressed us with his very mature phrasing of the music, for his over-arching concept of the movement, and for his very clear, firm tone on the piano. He's a very mature musician for his young age and a compelling soloist,” said NEP’s Music Director Richard Pittman, who presided over the competition.

Additionally, the concert will feature a gift drive to benefit Cradles to Crayons and an Instrument Petting Zoo, courtesy of Johnson Strings, for the children in the audience to try out instruments after the performance. Cradles to Crayons is asking for new, unwrapped toys and clothing for children aged 0-16. Boots, hats, gloves and coats are preferred.

About the New England Philharmonic Now celebrating their 40th season, the NEP, under the direction of Richard Pittman, is internationally renowned for its daring programming encompassing both contemporary and traditional works. The volunteer orchestra has earned nine ASCAP awards for Adventurous Programming and was included in the Arts Fuse’s top10 list of notable classical music performances of 2014. The orchestra’s illustrious past includes the installation of three landmark programs. The NEP became the first orchestra of its size to support a Composer-in-Residence (1985), introduce a Call for Scores Program (1985), and establish a Young Artist Competition (1994), legacies that endure today.
