Sports Week in Review, Aug. 7 - Aug. 13

The Lexington Blue Sox fire up the Intercity League postseason.

This is the time of summer when the Lexington Blue Sox seem to thrive. That's because it's time for the Intercity League playoffs.

The Blue Sox entered the start of this postseason looking to build on their already powerful dynasty. Since joining the league in 1995, they have won seven championships, including three straight since 2007.

This year, Lexington is going for its fourth straight. After a first-round bye, the Blue Sox began their title defense in the semifinals against the Wakefield Merchants, with Games 1 and 2 at Lexington High School.

On Thursday, the Blue Sox utilized a four-run inning to take a 6-1 victory. It also helped that staff ace Matt Karis was on top of his game. Karis struck out eight in his complete-game performance.

A win wasn't so easy to come by on Friday. Lexington trailed into the seventh inning until some well-placed bunts and a walk-off, two-run single by Ross Curley gave the Blue Sox a 2-1 win.

Lexington wrapped up the series and secured a spot in the ICL championship series on Saturday, escaping with a 3-2 win over Wakefield. The Blue Sox on Monday will take on Watertown in the title hunt.

Also this week, the Lexington Gaels wound down their 14A MiddleEssex summer softball league schedule. The Gaels picked up their second victory of the summer on Tuesday with a 7-5 win over Wellesley.
