Blue Sox close out Intercity League regular season; Lexington resident is lead planner for MassBike century ride.

The Lexington Blue Sox are ready for the Intercity League playoffs to get under way. They closed out the regular season this week with six games, taking home wins in four of them.

Lexington clinched first place and a first-round bye with a double-header sweep on Thursday, and came back Friday to beat the Wakefield Merchants 5-2. The latter came with the help of mostly reserve players.

With the top spot secure, manager Rick DeAngelis decided to give his bench some playing time before the postseason started. Four of the starting nine spots were filled by reserves, but it did little to slow Lexington as it held off Wakefield, another playoff team.

On Monday, the Blue Sox fell to a Doug Flutie led Reading Bulldogs team 1-0 at Lexington High School. The game's lone run came early on when Flutie – he of Hail Marys and dropkick field goals – knocked in a run when he reached on an error.

Later, Flutie helped squash a Blue Sox rally before it even started by snagging a hard line drive off the bat of two-time league MVP Dan Graham.

Also Monday, Lexington resident Bob Dangel spoke about the Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition's (MassBike) upcoming Summer Century and Family Ride, which takes off from LHS on Aug. 14.

Dangel, who sits on MassBike's board of directors and serves as treasurer, took over planning duties for the ride this year. It has not been held since 2007 when Concord served as the starting point.

Dangel is quite the cycling enthusiast who commutes to his office in Cambridge on two wheels each day. Last year, Dangel said he put about 6,200 miles on his bike.
