Lexington resident heads out on 5,000-mile bike ride; baseball, softball teams get on winning track
Since her time in the Girl Scouts, Lexington resident Kathryn Kern has learned to be a giving person. And she's not stopping now that she's graduated from college.
Kern, who was a member of the UMass Amherst crew squad before graduating this spring, is biking across the country with former teammate Isabella Donadio. The two are trying to raise enough money to cover the cost of a semester's tuition at UMass. Kern said she's doing to ride to give someone the same opportunity to go to school that she had.
Their 5,000 mile trek began this week on Cape Cod and will finish at San Francisco in a couple months.

The Lexington Blue Sox kept the winning ways alive with a 12-1 win over the Mooney Dental Tanners in Intercity League action at Lexington High School on Monday.
Lexington blew open an already one-sided game with eight runs in the sixth inning. The big hit of the inning came from Eric Poling, who drove in three runs with a triple. Poling had four RBIs in the game.
Another Lexington team, the Alexander's Pizza Chiefs of the men's Senior Softball League, posted a big win this week. The Chiefs downed Five-O's 22-5 at Estabrook Elementary School on Tuesday night.
Still, Alexander's Pizza's Rob McCullough, the star of the game with three triples and six RBIs, reiterated that the softball league means more than just wins and losses.
"I had four guys (that) tonight was their first game of the year," McCullough said. "It will be interesting to catch up and see what's going on with their families."
