Lexington teams beat up on Melrose; girls' soccer falls to Belmont; runners prep for fall road race.
It was a good week for the Lexington High School field hockey and boys' soccer teams. Both Minutemen teams kept their strong start to the season going against opponents from Melrose High School.
First, it was the boys' soccer team's turn, which remained unbeaten with a scoreless tie in a rain-soaked game at Melrose on Tuesday. Both teams started strong, but any chance of lighting up the scoreboard all but vanished when the skies opened up.
What started as a drizzle quickly became a torrential downpour and players were forced to sidestep puddles on the field.

On Wednesday, the Lexington field hockey team blanked Melrose 4-0 to pick up its sixth victory of the season. The Minutemen snapped out of an early scoring funk with three quick goals before halftime to pull away.
And the Lexington defense was up to the task, holding the winless Red Raiders to a single shot.

But Lexington came up one sport shy of making it a total sweep of Melrose this week. The two sides kicked off the week on the girls' volleyball court, and the Red Raiders came away with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-12) sweep.
The first two sets started close – Lexington led the second 8-6 at one point – but Melrose came back in each to put the Minutemen in a big hole.
Also this week, Lexington's girls'soccer team fell 2-0 to nearby Middlesex League foe Belmont on Thursday. The shutout kept Belmont unbeaten and dropped the Minutemen to 3-3-2 for the season.
And runners in Lexington prepped for this weekend's Hastings Harvest 5k run/walk. More than 200 runners are expected for the road race, which takes place Sunday at the Hayden Recreation Center.
