The Unusual Prom Experience of LHS Grad Sophia Bernitz
As told by her mom, Fran Bernitz.
New graduate of ’12, Sophia Ilana Bernitz, had an interesting experience on Prom Night.
Sophia, who will be attending Oberlin Conservatory of Music in the fall, concentrating in Violin and Viola Performance, was not able to join in the pre-prom festivities with her class.
She had a dress rehearsal and then concert at New England Conservatory’s famed Jordan Hall that same evening. Sophia, who was concertmaster for NEC’s String Chamber Orchestra, had a performance on Prom Night that commenced at 7:30 p.m. in Boston, long after the bus had left from LHS for the Danversport Yacht Club.

The young violinist took it all in stride, rehearsing with her orchestra in the late afternoon, performing at Jordan Hall, and then making a mad dash to change at NEC into her prom attire. Sophia’s prom date was her friend, Keith Williams, a fellow NEC Preparatory School musician (cellist), who watched her perform, and then waited patiently as she transformed from “violin mode” to “prom mode.”
Mom, Fran Bernitz, attended the concert and then whisked the prom-goers up to the prom venue by her Subaru “limo,” arriving there by 9:30 p.m.
