Raising a 9 year old and going through the paternal ritual of aiding and evolving your child's sports and physical activities - a lot of parents can identify with some of the following questions that have been raised amongst us all:
1) Have I signed up my child to all the activities available? What will happen if I miss a few?
2) If I focus on a few limited set of activities, would that be narrowing down my child;s options in future?
3) Is this to meet my personal goals or for my child's happiness?
4) Once I do have my child engaged in an activity - what and where does the boundary lie between the child learning the discipline of an activity and really enjoying an activity for the sake of it - and this question brings up the debate for this topic.
I have enjoyed watching the coaches organize and train the children in a very systematic and professional manner. The kids have also enjoyed being part of a team and learnt a lot more than the sports or activity they are engaged in - perhaps this is what is also called community building. But I don't know why, I am left wanting more out of this for selfish me as a parent. What is it? I don't know! Can't put a finger on it yet.
Maybe there is still something more that is missing for my child as well.
Sometimes, this awesome and well disciplined training seems perfect but yet too robotic and devoid of any feeling or soul into it. Am I being too poetic or sissy or maybe a dreamer!!! I don't know. Not wishing the discipline within the game to go away, but do have a desire for seeing a bit of the "Chillax" factor added into the mix. Social factor, fun factor, goof off factor and lots more.... so we don't follow a regimen for the sake of following one and at the end whistle just pack up and go....
Maybe this is just a rant of a confused parent who is musing over the memories of a less structured child hood with lots of fun filled pick up games and playtime.. yet appreciating the very discipline and structured training that our children are recieving today...
as I said before.. I don't know what? Looking for that extra something???
