Winter Sports Season in Review
Lexington athletic teams put the finishing touches on the winter sports season.
The girls’ ice hockey team’s loss in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Division 1 state tournament capped off the winter athletic season for Minuteman teams. And though their seasons may have ended prematurely, it was still all-in-all a successful season for many LHS teams.
The boys’ basketball squad garnered a year’s worth of attention before the season even got under way. That’s because, for the first time in a long time, the Minutemen took the court without Bob Farias on the bench as coach.
His contract was not renewed last spring, and in his place, to take over the program.

Hobbs and the Minutemen . That set the tone for a season in which Lexington earned a spot in the North D-1 sectional field.
Unfortunately, LHS didn’t make it far in the postseason after running into defending state champion Central Catholic in the first round. But . They led the Raiders for much of their playoff contest before falling behind late in the game.

As dramatically as the boys’ team started the season, that’s how the girls’ team closed out theirs.
After an -and- regular season, the Minutemen needed three wins in their final four games to make the postseason. Leaving nothing to chance, Lexington went out and made it easy on itself by .
That set the stage for the Minutemen to host a preliminary round contest. Like the boys’ team, Lexington led much of its lone postseason contest. But also like the boys, the girls’ squad and were sent home early.
As mentioned above, the Lexington girls’ ice hockey team was the final Minuteman squad standing this winter.
The team turned in a spectacular regular season, which included a victory over Middlesex League rival Woburn, handing the Tanners thus far. Lexington also that foretold their deep run in the D-1 state tournament.
Lexington kicked off the postseason with a over Watertown/Melrose to set up a rematch with Woburn in the quarterfinals. However, the Minutemen , as the Tanners avenged the early loss and are still alive in the tournament field.
Unfortunately, the season wasn’t quite as successful for the boys’ hockey team under . The year was filled with numerous and for the Minutemen.
In the season finale, the LHS squad , donning purple and red jerseys to commemorate the event.
The Lexington wrestling team also enjoyed much success this season. The season began with for the Minutemen, and it with several along the way during the regular season.
LHS also turned in a strong showing at the Division 1 state meet, hosted by Methuen High School.
In the pool, the Minutemen’s boys’ swimming and diving team had a familiar face as coach. Chris Randall, a former LHS swimmer himself, to take over the winter program.
Lexington kicked off 2011 with a key , and kept the momentum going through the end of the season and into the D-1 state meet. There, the Minutemen finished in the top 10.
The and indoor track and field teams entered the year with high expectations. They came through, as the Minuteman , and both turned in .
