A year round community pool for Lexington
Lexington residents would greatly benefit from having a year round public swimming facility in town.
A group of concerned Lexington residents started LexSwim and is petitioning the town Recreation Committee to prioritize a year round swimming pool facility in the capital plan and to appoint a committee to identify options for location, fund-raising and services. With a town owned facility, Lexington could provide the resources to offer year round swim lessons, competitive swimming, triathlon training, aqua aerobics, aqua therapy, master swim programs and a wide variety of other individual and group activities that would greatly benefit our growing community.
In addition to meeting the athletic and recreational needs of individual community members, an aquatic center could provide exciting opportunities for our growing number of high school athletes. The Lexington High School and Minuteman Tech High School currently have very active varsity girls and boys swim teams. However, the future of those teams is in question due to the impending demolition of the Minuteman Tech pool this winter (there is no room in the budget for a new pool and neither school has a good long term option for a replacement practice location). Unfortunately, the Hayden pool is not available and does not meet the standards for competitive swimming. In addition to the two high school swim teams, the loss of the Minuteman pool will displace two local US competitive teams, swim lessons, summer camps, water safety programs and adult swimmers, all of which could be a source of income for an indoor pool.
Bringing year round swimming to the town of Lexington is an exciting opportunity that needs to be carefully considered by the Recreation Committee. The rewards stretch across the entirety of our population and would provide a chance for diverse groups of people to make connections with townspeople they might not otherwise meet, creating a sense of community that we are sadly losing in today’s increasing disconnected society.
