End Of the Line For Lynnfield Girls' Tennis
On steamy day in Lexington, Martha's Vineyard again puts an end to Pioneers' season.
Unless you're holding a trophy, the end is never easy.
Monday in Lexington, for the third straight year, the Martha's Vineyard girls' tennis team put an end to Lynnfield's season, steamrolling the Pioneers, 5-0, in the MIAA Division 3 state semifinals. No match went beyond two sets as the two-time defending state champs took another step toward a potential three-peat.
"There was no dark horse here," said Lynnfield coach Craig Stone. "Obviously Vineyard is a deep and talented team. And they return everyone next year. But what I'm pleased about obviously, is going to four sectional finals with this crew, They finish with a 79-5 record overall, four sectional championships, a state championship, and a couple league championships. To be able to play in this arena, in front of this crowd, still earning a sectional championship, I couldn't be more proud of them."

In singles, and playing at No. 1 for the last time, Sarah Mezini lost to the Vineyard's Kat Roberts, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Camie Foley fell to Kelly Klaren 6-0, 6-0. And at No. 3 singles, Katie Nevils lost to Victoria Scott 6-0, 6-1. Scott normally plays on the No. 1 doubles team that will play in Saturday's MIAA state individual finals. But against Lynnfield she was inserted at No. 3 singles and scored an impressive win.
In doubles, Lizzie Williamson and Hannah Rabasca beat Katie Nugent and Alexa Vittiglio, 6-1, 6-2. And Molly and Paige Pogue won at No. 2 doubles, beating Laura Mucci and Allison Carey 6-1, 6-3.

"I have no doubt in my mind that each one of them gave no less than a 110 percent," said Stone. "We just met a deeper more talented team. There's no way around that."
