Fluency--is it developmental or not???

Sometimes children have difficulty expressing what they want to say.  Their expressive language may be characterized by repetitions of certain sounds, syllables, words, or phrases. They may appear to get "stuck". This may be part of typical language development.  When children go through the "language explosion stage" dysfluent speech is common.  However, if it persists beyond that, it can become frustrating for a child and begin to cause anxiety about speaking along with secondary characteristics. There are strategies that will help promote fluent speech such as easy onset, phonation paired with exhalation, and reducing rate of speech. These strategies will also work with adolescents and adults. Please contact Brenda Gharabegian at Speech and Language Pathology Services in Lynnfield to learn more.
