MALDEN, MA — Officers recently helped save a person who was experiencing a suspected drug overdose, the police department announced Wednesday.

Officers Blake Ferry, Anthony DeLeon, and Sergeant Salvatore Gennetti responded to the scene on the 300 block of Broadway in Malden on Tuesday after receiving a report of a medical emergency taking place. Upon arrival, the trio encountered a man who was suffering from a condition believed to have been brought on by drug use.

“Officers discovered a significant quantity of suspected fentanyl on the individual and in close proximity to the location where he was reportedly staying,” the department said in a statement. “Unbeknownst to the responding officers at the time, the bag containing the substance had become unsecured, and a portion of its contents had been dispersed onto the individual and into the surrounding air.”

Ferry, DeLeon, and Gennetti took necessary precautions after discovering the fentanyl’s presence and were not harmed as they helped treat the 47-year-old Saugus resident.

Gennetti started as a cadet for the Malden Police Department in 1997 and worked his way up through the ranks to Sergeant, which he was promoted to in January of this year. Ferry has received citations for responding to numerous emergency calls throughout his six-year career.

Malden police also announced Wednesday that it is seeking to speak with eyewitnesses to an incident that took place at Fellsmere Park on 269 Fellsway East on Sunday, March 29. Anyone who was present at or has information about the physical altercation is being asked to contact Detective David Yung at 781-397-7181 extension 1404.
