"Black Power Mixtapes" Film Screening

Soulkore Productions and Malden Communities of Color announce a special screening of The Black Power Mixtapes, 1967-1975, a film by Goran Olsson. According to New York Times critic A. O. Scott, the film is "an extraordinary feat of editing and archival research, taking up a familiar period in American history from a fresh and fascinating angle." In the late 1960s and early ’70s, Swedish television journalists traveled to the United States with the intention of “showing the country as it really is.” Some of the images and interviews they collected have been assembled by Goran Hugo Olsson into a roughly chronological collage that restores a complex human dimension to the racial history of the era. Featuring: Erykah Badu, Harry Belafonte, Stokely Carmichael, Eldrige Cleaver, Kathleen Cleaver, Angela Davis, Louis Farrakhan, John Forté, Robin Kelley, Talib Kweli, Abiodun Oyewole, Sonia Sanchez, Bobby Seale, Questlove, Meliv Van Peebles among others.

The Black Power Mixtapes will be shown on Tuesday, February 28th. Doors open at 6:00pm and the film will begin at 6:30, followed by a discussion. Malden Access Television is located at 145 Pleasant St. and is handicapped accessible. For more information, email info@soulkore.com or call MATV at 781-321-6400.
