Malden Catholic's Harrington Wins 'Mr. Hockey' Award

The award recognizes the top male hockey player in Massachusetts.

MALDEN, MA—On the heels of another successful season for the Malden Catholic Lancers, defenseman Pat Harrington has taken home a prestigious award for his work during the season.

The senior captain Harrington was named as the winner of ESPNBoston.com's "Mr.Hockey" award, becoming the first ever defenseman to win the award. Harrington led the Lancers to their fifth Super 8 championship in the past eight years.

“It comes down to our philosophy of defense first and he’s our leader, our captain and is just an outstanding player with great skating abilities,” Malden Catholic coach John McLean said per ESPNBoston.com. “He’s probably one of the best skaters in high school hockey and he knows how to use that ability and is learning the game of defense and I think he has a bright future.”

The Lancers have made their mark on the award, with Harrington becoming the fourth Malden Catholic player to win the award.

Despite playing a defensive position, Harrington lead the team with 25 points, which included 11 goals. He also helped the Lancers allow just 30 goals in 25 games this season. According to the ESPNBoston.com announcement, Harrington elected to become a defensemen to make the varsity roster as a freshman, and has developed into one of the best defensemen in the state.
