Malden Cultural Council Awards Funds To 19 Grant Proposals

The Cultural Council was unable to do more this year because of fiscal challenges the organization faces.

Article and info provided by the Malden Cultural Council:

Each year the Malden Cultural Council meets to review grant proposals and to award funds to those that meet the criteria of “promoting excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences in order to improve the quality of life for all Malden residents” in accordance with the Council mission.

This year the Malden Cultural Council members were faced with tough decisions as they participated in the grant review process. During the recent public meeting held Saturday morning, November 17th at the Malden Public Library the volunteer members that make up the cultural council were tasked with the challenge of disbursing a total of $18,708.00 funds amongst 38 grants with requests for projects adding up to just over $53,600.00.

This is nearly one third more proposals than were received in the previous year with approximately $10,000.00 fewer dollars than last year to work with. The grants were each discussed and carefully reviewed throughout the morning and 19 proposals will receive a portion of the requested funding this year.

“We enjoyed reading the proposals,” said Susan Burke and other members agreed adding, “We are certainly pleased to see many excellent ideas for arts and cultural activities for Malden in the next year.”

Cultural Council Chairperson, Katherine Strissel concluded, “Of course this made it even more difficult for us to decide how to divide our limited funds, but the council looks forward to seeing these excellent projects take off and for several successful projects from last year to continue into a promising second.”
