Malden High Field Hockey Falls to Saugus
The Malden High School field hockey team showed signs of improvement on Monday, but still lost to Saugus, 4-0.
The Malden High School field hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision at the hands of non-league opponent Saugus on Monday at Pine Banks Park. While the result may not have been what the Golden Tornadoes were looking for, head coach Susan Famiglietti said the effort was certainly there.
"I was happy with the girls today," said Famiglietti. "They haven't been passing too well, and today they really put everything together, even though the score was not reflective of the game."
Saugus held much of the possession during the first half, but managed only one goal before halftime as the Malden defense looked resolute and determined. Nichole Lowe opened the scoring for the Sachems (7-2) in the first half with Emily McBride collecting the assist.

"The defense has been solid for us throughout the whole season," said Famiglietti. "I was very happy with the passing, and their dodging skills really improved today."
Malden's defensive effort was negated by the stalwart play of the Saugus back line, however, as the Golden Tornadoes (2-5-1) managed just two shots on goal for the game.

"We didn't get enough shots on net today," said Famiglietti. "That's where we went wrong...you can't win games with just two shots."
The Sachems haven't lost a road game all season, improving to 5-0 away from home with the win.
Netminder Shannan Howe had a fine game between the pipes for Malden, collecting 13 saves in a valiant effort, but ultimately being done in by the Sachems advantage in possession.
The second half was when the dam burst for the Golden Tornadoes as the Sachems were able to notch three goals despite the best efforts of the Malden defense.
Lauren Sanford picked up a goal and an assist for Saugus, while Jackie Doherty and Courtney Selvage also tallied for the visitors.
The Golden Tornadoes face another tough non-league foe on Tuesday when the Methuen Rangers come to town.
"Methuen has a very strong team," said Famiglietti. "Last time we lost to them, and we're hoping to give them a better game."
"I'm hoping we can pull off a win, but that's going to be a very tough win. They have a very strong team," said Famiglietti. "They go to the tournament every year and they have a lot of veteran players."
