Malden Installs Missing Man Table At Senior Center To Honor Veterans

MALDEN, MA — The city has installed a Missing Man Table at the entrance of the Malden Senior Center on 7 Washington St., creating a permanent tribute to prisoners of war, service members missing in action, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. military.

"As our nation prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, this Missing Man Table serves as both a lasting tribute to those who never came home and a reminder of our commitment to the veterans who have served our country," Mayor Gary Christenson said. "With the Veterans Services Office now part of our Health and Human Services Department, we also hope this display encourages veterans and their families to learn more about the programs, benefits and resources available to them."

Also known as the Fallen Comrade Table, the display has long been featured at formal military dinners, banquets, and memorial ceremonies as a way to honor service members who remain missing, were held as prisoners of war, or died in service to the country.

Each item on the table carries symbolic meaning. According to the city, the table represents the nation's continuing concern for those who remain missing. At the same time, the white tablecloth symbolizes the purity of intention with which service members answered the nation's call. A single red rose honors the loved ones who continue to wait for answers, and a yellow ribbon represents hope for the safe return of those still missing.

Other elements include a slice of lemon, representing the bitter fate endured by those who were captured or remain missing, and a pinch of salt to symbolize the tears shed by families through years of uncertainty. A Bible reflects the strength and comfort found through faith, an inverted glass signifies that the missing cannot be present to share a toast, and an empty chair serves as a reminder that those who are absent are never forgotten.
