Malden Man Pleads Guilty to Attempted Murder

Wilbert Gabriel, 36, of Malden, pled guilty to several charges related to poisoning of his then girlfriend.

A Malden man was sentenced to eight to ten years in state prison Monday, after pleading guilty to charges related to the attempted murder and poisoning of his then girlfriend.

Wilbert Gabriel, 36, of Malden, pled guilty to two counts of assault to murder, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and a single count of attempted murder, according to a statement by the Middlesex County District Attorney.

Malden police said a neighbor , after hearing a woman's screams for help in an apartment building at 68 Washington St.

First responders found the unidentified female victim, aged 30, lying on the floor and vomiting blood.

Police said that, upon further investigation, they determined Gabriel had strangled the victim until she was unconscious, bit her along her neck and poured a toxic chemical into her mouth. Gabriel then swallowed the substance himself, police said.

He was arrested and arraigned upon his release from the hospital, and was held on $50,000 cash bail.

“This is a troubling, serious case of domestic violence where the defendant attempted to kill the victim by strangling her and pouring a toxic chemical into her mouth, due to jealousy that she wanted to end their relationship,” District Attorney Gerry Leone said. “We commend the victim for her courage during the legal process, as this is a paradigmatic case of power and control where the defendant committed life threatening domestic violence.”
