Malden Officials Encouraged By High Voting Turnout

The city's 55 percent turnout Tuesday was its highest in a non-presidential race since at least 2008.

MALDEN, MA — Malden's voter turnout in Tuesday's midterm was its highest in a non-presidential election since at least 2008. Fifty-five percent of the city's registered voters showed up at the polls for Election Day.

"I’m very happy with our turnout; wish we could get 55+ in all our elections," Carol Ann Desiderio, assistant registrar of voters, told Patch in an email Thursday morning. "As compared to historic turnout in mid-terms, we did slightly better."

Malden had a 47 percent turnout in 2014 and 50 percent turnout in 2010. The city's online records only go back to 2008.

The 55 percent on Tuesday was made up of more than 17,000 Malden residents who made their voices heard. It still fell well short of some surrounding communities: Melrose had a 72 percent turnout, Medford had a 64 percent turnout, and Saugus had a 59 percent turnout.

Desiderio was "hopeful" to see the numbers continue to rise.
