Malden Opens Cooling Locations Amid Record Heat In MA

MALDEN, MA — The city has opened two cooling centers this week as high temperatures and dangerous heat continue across much of Massachusetts.

Residents can cool off at the Community Room at the Malden Police Station and the Malden Senior Center during designated hours over the next several days. The city encouraged anyone without access to air conditioning to take advantage of the facilities.

The National Weather Service has warned of dangerous heat across much of the state this week, with heat index values expected to exceed 100 degrees in some areas. The hot and humid conditions are expected to continue through Thursday before temperatures begin to ease heading into the holiday weekend.

The city also reminded residents to "drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty," stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. Officials also urged residents to never leave children or pets in parked vehicles and to check on older adults, neighbors and others who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illness.

Cooling centers will be open at the following times and locations:

Community Room – Malden Police Station (800 Eastern Ave.)

• Wednesday, July 1: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Thursday, July 2: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Friday, July 3: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Malden Senior Center (7 Washington St.)

• Wednesday, July 1: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Thursday, July 2: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
