Five-year-old Cayden was having a “really bad day” Tuesday – that was until he met Malden Police Officer Steven Mulcahy Jr.

Cayden has autism, and Tuesday morning, at first he wasn’t allowed to perform in his school’s concert and then, when he was, he was too upset and overwhelmed to stay in school.

“He cried, said he wanted to be like the other kids. He said his Christmas was ruined and school was over for him. My heart was broken,” his mother Sheryl Carbone posted on the Malden Patch Facebook page.

After a quick trip to Burger King, Cayden’s day turned around – as Mulcahy spent his break cheering him up.

“Cayden walked right up to the officer,” Carbone wrote. “The officer knew right away [Cayden] had autism and was special and he had a really bad day.”

“I will be sending a fantastic present to the police station to say thank you for doing the right thing by a little boy,” Carbone wrote. “You made his day and you didn’t have to. You restored my faith in good people around the holiday! Thank you from everyone that loves Cayden!”
