Malden State Of The City And Override Forums Make Up A Busy March Schedule

Three events about the potential override will be held before the special election at the end of the month.

MALDEN, MA — City leadership is holding multiple events this month that residents may find important to Malden’s present and immediate future.

Three forums are scheduled in the coming weeks to give the community an opportunity to learn about and give their input on the Proposition 2 1/2 tax override request that will be voted on in a special election on Tuesday, March 31. The first forum is slated to take place on Thursday, March 5 in the auditorium of the Beebe School, located at 501 Pleasant St. The second event will be held in the auditorium of the Ferryway School on 150 Cross St. The final forum before the election will be on Wednesday, March 25 in the Linden STEAM Academy’s auditorium at 29 Westcott St. All three events will begin at 6 p.m. and feature presentations by Mayor Gary Christenson, City Councillors, and City Finance employees.

The City Council voted unanimously to approve the override ballot question in December, and voters will now be given two amount options to choose from of either $5.4 million or $8.2 million of total tax increase amounts in addition to voting against the override entirely. The Council’s decision marked the first time in the city’s history an override had ever been approved to even be put on a ballot for the community to decide.
