Obituary: Karina Moreira, 16, of Malden

Karina X. Moreira, a longtime resident of Malden, passed away at the age of 16 on Thursday, Oct. 2, at Children’s Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Karina was born in Brazil, the daughter of Valmir Moreira and Daniella Xavier. At the age of 3, she and her family came to the United States, first living in Cambridge before settling down in Malden.

Karina had always had an interest in makeup and fashion. At the age of 12, while recovering from her first diagnosis of cancer, she began a fashion blog, “Chic by Karina.” She gained thousands of followers, and her blog gained the attention of many in the fashion industry, including Gisele Bundchen and Taylor Swift.

Although her cancer had gone into remission, it returned this last year and grew progressively worse this past summer. Her courage and attitude despite her troubles was an inspiration to many. Karina also enjoyed swimming, loved to travel and liked to relax with the occasional “spa day.”

She is survived by her parents, Valmir Moreira and Daniella Xavier, and her brother, Guilherme Moriera, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation for Karina will be held at the Jenkins Auditorium at Malden High School, 77 Salem St., Malden, from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5. A funeral service will begin at 5 p.m. Burial will be private.
