Prosecutors Tried To Keep Driver In Revere Crash Off The Road

A Globe investigation revealed police reports from 2011 and 2014 had Autumn Harris arrested for driving drunk, but she was never convicted.

REVERE, MA — The woman charged with driving into a group of pedestrians, killing an infant and her 5-year-old sister, was arrested twice in drunk driving cases and in one instance prosecutors attempted to keep her off the road, according to The Boston Globe.

Autumn Harris, 42, is being held on $10,000 bail on charges including motor vehicle homicide after Sunday evening's crash that took the lives of 5-year-old Adrianna Mejia-Rivera and 2-month-old Natasha Nicole Mejia-Rivera. Three others, including a 2-year-old child, were injured.

The Globe reported that prosecutors in 2015 tried to keep Harris from getting her license reinstated following her acquittal in a drunk driving case. The case stemmed from a 2014 incident in Medford in which she rear-ended another driver at a red light, the Globe reported. A police report from the crash said she was belligerent and angry, and her breath smelled of alcohol. She refused a breathalyzer.

The Globe also reported Harris refused a breathalyzer after crashing into a snowbank in Ipswich in 2011. The police report again indicated she smelled of alcohol. Harris admitted to sufficient facts, and the case was continued without a finding.

Prosecutors this week said Harris veered off the road on Route 145 in Revere Sunday, crashing into the five pedestrians. Harris told police she had taken a muscle relaxant the night before, barely getting any sleep, having a beer Sunday afternoon, and vaping CBD oil in the car, according to prosecutors.
