MBTA fares are set to increase about 5 percent starting July 1.
The fares for subway and bus lines would increase 10 cents, while monthly passes would increase $5, according to Boston.com.
The fare hike plan was announced the same week as the launch of late-night service Friday.
The higher fares are expected to generate $20 million in revenue, according to Boston.com, and the MBTA is expected to have a $10 million budget surplus next year.
The last fare hike was in 2012, when fares jumped 23 percent to help the transportation system close a huge budget gap.
