New Trash/Recycling Service in Marblehead After Longtime Contractor Quits
Marblehead has a new trash/recycling hauler after Hiltz Waste Disposal abruptly quit.
MARBLEHEAD, MA — Marblehead has a new trash/recycling hauler after its longtime vendor abruptly quit. JRM started operating Thursday. JRM accepts single-stream recycling, meaning recyclables like paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum, and plastic can be tossed in the same container. Trash and recycling should be placed curbside by 7 a.m.
Hiltz Waste Disposal, which has operated in North Shore communities including Marblehead and Swampscott, said it's downsizing but will continue to operate. Company President Deborah Hiltz called the move "difficult but necessary for the continued viability of the company." Hiltz, based in Gloucester, has operated on the North Shore for over 40 years. Hiltz said laid-off workers were given severance packages.
“Many of our drivers and laborers have been with us for many years,” Hiltz said in a statement. “They know the routes for the various towns and would be a great asset to any company that hires them.”

The move left communities scrambling to find new vendors; Swampscott officials initially said service would be out until next week but announced Thursday it found a new contractor.
