Swampscott Trash/Recycling Pickup Restored After Longtime Vendor Quits

Swampscott trash/recycling pickup will resume Saturday after Hiltz Waste DIsposal abruptly ceased operations.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — Swampscott officials agreed on a contract with a new trash/recycling vendor after its previous contractor abruptly quit. Republic Services will start pickups Sat., Sept. 3. Pickups ended Wednesday after Hiltz Waste Disposal ceased operations.

Hiltz Waste Disposal, of Gloucester, has operated in North Shore communities including Marblehead and Swampscott for over 40 years. Company President Deborah Hiltz said the company is downsizing but will continue operating. She called the move "difficult but necessary for the continued viability of the company." Hiltz said laid-off workers were given severance packages.

“Many of our drivers and laborers have been with us for many years,” Hiltz said in a statement. “They know the routes for the various towns and would be a great asset to any company that hires them.”
