Alleged Car Thief Tracked By K9 To Woods Of Northborough

The Marlborough man was located in Northborough, with the help of a police dog with a great nose.

MARLBOROUGH, MA—A Marlborough man is facing charges for stealing a vehicle, with two police departments, the Massachusetts State Police and a K9 tracking him to the woods of Northborough.

Randy Allen Niven, 25, Sherwood Drive South, Marlborough, was arrested Friday morning at approximately 11 a.m. and charged with receiving stolen property (motor vehicle).

It started around 10:15 a.m. on Friday when a West Street resident called saying there was a suspicious person at the door. Police arrived to find a man at Church and West streets. The subject was wearing a backpack that he threw in a brook and then ran into the woods off of Brewer Street.

The officer then located a stolen vehicle parked off of Church street. The backpack contained what appeared to be stolen property. Officers established a perimeter and additional support was requested from the State Police as well as K9 units from State and Marlborough Police. A K9 unit apprehended the suspect after tracking him for approximately 30 minutes. He was captured in the wooded area between Church and Brewer Streets and Interstate 290.

Officers are canvassing the area to determine if any homes were entered. The vehicle and operator arrested in Northborough today was the suspect and vehicle involved in a pursuit in other jurisdictions last night but eluded capture.
