MARLBOROUGH, MA — A charity ball sponsored by the Marlborough mayor's office that raises money for people in emergency situations has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The biennial event raises money for the city's charity fund, which provides help for residents who experience hardships like eviction, a natural disaster, or unexpected medical bills. The event was supposed to take place at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel.

Most large gatherings across Massachusetts are being canceled to prevent person-to-person transmission of COVID-19. Everything from the Boston Marathon to the South Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade have either been canceled or postponed.
