Fisherman Who Drowned Off Nantucket ID'd

Nantucket, MA — A fisherman who fell overboard and drowned off the coast of Nantucket Monday has been identified.

Police said the man was Luke Gurney, 48, of Oak Bluffs, according to the Cape Cod Times.

Gurney was aboard the "No Regrets" fishing vessel when he was pulled into the ocean by the boat's nets Monday morning, the Coast Guard said.

The incident happened shortly before 9:15 a.m., about a quarter-mile west of Nantucket's Great Point. The man's body was recovered at about 1 p.m.

"Our thoughts go out to the family of the victim and the entire fishing community who is affected by this tragedy,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. Marcus Gherardi in a statement. “Anytime we are not able to accomplish our goal of saving lives, we are deeply saddened as we also take it to heart."

The Coast Guard launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, HC-144 Ocean Sentry plane and two boats to lead the search. Vessels with the Nantucket Harbormaster, Chatham Harbormaster, Chatham Fire Dive Team and other local government agencies were also involved in the search, as were multiple Good Samaritan vessels.

No Regrets is homeported in Oak Bluffs.
