Island Bank Accounts Raided by Unknown Scammers

At least 90 Martha's Vineyard Savings Bank accounts were drained of almost $100,000 over Labor Day weekend, Island newspapers report.

Both Island newspapers report the Martha's Vineyard Savings Bank confirmed Wednesday that unknown thieves had gained access to at least 90 customer bank accounts over Labor Day weekend, stealing almost $100,000.

Bank president Paul Falvey told the MV Times that the scammers had accessed customer accounts from ATMs in New York City, Indianapolis and Chicago.

Customers whose accounts lost money were immediately reimbursed by the bank, which is investigating the thefts, Falvey told the Vineyard Gazette.

Edgartown police are investigating at four cases of debit-card fraud, according to the Times.

A notice on the bank's website reads:

"ATM and Debit card holders. If you experience or suspect fraudulent activity on your card, please call 1-800-554-8969 to suspend service."
