BOSTON, MA – Three people were rescued from a sailboat 1,200 miles off Cape Cod Saturday, according to the Coast Guard. The Swedish sailboat AELA lost its mast in bad weather as the sailors traveled from the Bahamas to Bermuda and made a last-ditch attempt to reach the Azores, the Coast Guard said. The trio was in good condition.

The sailors activated an emergency radio beacon that was picked up by the Coast Guard in Boston. A rescue was coordinated and the Hong Kong tanker Alpine Melina was diverted to meet up with the disabled sailboat. The sailors were taken aboard the tanker en route to Mexico, where they will take flights home to Sweden, the Coast Guard said.
