Someone Must Wash The Dishes: An Anti-Suffrage Satire Performance

Thursday, Oct. 3, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Free; registration required

Next year marks the 100 year anniversary of American women getting The Vote! Come celebrate with "Someone Must Wash The Dishes: An Anti-Suffrage Satire".

Many women fought against getting the vote in the early 1900s, but none with more charm, prettier clothes—and less logic — than the fictional speaker in this satiric monologue written by pro-suffragist Marie Jenney Howe, back in 1912. “Woman suffrage is the reform against nature,” declares Howe’s unlikely, but irresistibly likeable, heroine. Reviewers have called this production “wicked” in its wit, and have labeled Michèle LaRue’s

performance “side-splitting.” An Illinois native, now based in New York, LaRue is a professional actress who tours nationally with a repertoire of shows by Gilded Age and Progressive Era American writers. Seating for this special performance is limited. Please register.

Join us to discuss Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer. Bestselling author Jonathan Safran Foer spent much of his life oscillating between enthusiastic carnivore and occasional vegetarian. For years he was content to live with uncertainty about his own dietary choices-but once he started a family, the moral dimensions of food became increasingly important. Faced with the prospect of being unable to explain why we eat some animals and not others, Foer set out to explore the origins of many eating traditions and the fictions involved with creating them. Traveling to the darkest corners of our dining habits, Foer raises the unspoken question behind every fish we eat, every chicken we fry, and every burger we grill. Part memoir and part investigative report, Eating Animals is a book that, in the words of the Los Angeles Times, places Jonathan Safran Foer "at the table with our greatest philosophers" -and a must-read for anyone who cares about building a more humane and healthy world.

New members are always welcome. Copies are available at the library! You do not need to register, but if you'd like an email reminder about the meeting, please feel free to do so.
