Legion 110 Post Celebrating and Retiring American Flags

Medfield’s American Legion Beckwith Post 110 conducted a ceremony to retire old and worn out American Flags on June 13th at the Medfield Transfer Station.

The unserviceable flags were collected from numerous collection points around town, i.e., Wills Hardware, The Center at Medfield, Medfield Public Library and of course at the Transfer Station.

These collection points are available throughout the year, however Spring is when most are deposited for retirement.

The picture represents about one half of the flags that were collected. The ceremony being conducted is actually a celebration of the flag's useful life. These flags were used by our citizens to display a patriotic commitment to our Country. Most of the flags served to mark and honor the grave sites of deceased citizens who once served in our Armed Forces.

The American Legion has been conducting these ceremonies since 1937.

Both Boy Scout Troops in Medfield occasionally conduct a similar ceremony. Both do so to insure the dignified disposal of unserviceable American flags.

Please remember us if you have a flag that needs retiring and drop it off at one of the collection points mentioned.
