A Medfield Historical Minute...

This "Medfield Historical Minute" is brought to you by town historian Richard DeSorgher.
A little something to read and learn to give you a little break during this time of boredom during isolation due to the Coronavirus Crisis. A different "Medfield Historical Minute" will appear each day during the Crisis.

"During World War II much of the Medfield school’s activities centered on the war effort. Medfield students purchased war stamps and bonds, they helped with all savage drives, they collected bags of milkweed pods for floss which was used to make life preservers and they collected clothing and supplies which was sent to allied nations. The schools also cooperated with local farmers and businessmen by releasing pupils during emergencies to help overcome the manpower shortage. Several boys on the auxiliary fire department were released when needed by the town’s fire department.

Students were given training in school to prepare them for the armed services. All boys were taught to swim and were tested at the Hyde Park YMCA, physical education class was made tougher to prepare the boys for strenuous physical training for basic boot training."
