Generating Interest In Curbide Composting in Medfield
In early September, a group of Medfielders met in person and via Zoom to discuss promoting and generating interest in establishing a curbside composting program in Town.
The group has been in contact with Black Earth Compost, which already services many local municipalities, and is confident Black Earth is a reliable service provider. Composting is an easy way to help reduce and divert waste from landfills and incinerators. According to MassDEP 2022 data, “food scraps make up almost 22% of the waste stream in MA”.
Composting has many benefits including: increasing the nutrients in our soil and food to create healthier plants; composting pulls and stores carbon out of the air; compost added to soil is an effective way to deal with flooding and runoff as it infiltrates soil and holds more water.
The way curbside composting works is simple:
- Sort your food scraps
- Wheel out your 13 gallon bin to the curb and Black Earth swings by and empties it.
- In the spring you receive a voucher for a cubic foot bag of compost!
In order to establish a curbside compost route in Medfield, Black Earth needs at least 100 residents to sign up and express interest in the paid service. The service will begin in Medfield with an every other week pick-up program and will expand to weekly as more residents sign-on.
The company offers starter kits to make it easy to get started.
This curbside program offers you an easy and convenient way to help the environment by reducing waste and creating nutritious soil.
The cost for the program is $16.99/month or $89.99/six months.
