Knitting for Others Ministry at UCC Medfield Marks It’s Two Year Anniversary

It has been a fruitful two years for the Knitting for Others Ministry at The United Church of Christ In Medfield. Susan Holbrook and Gayle Edgar began this ministry in May of 2017 in order to bring together knitters and crocheters in service and in friendship and to make beautiful items for others. The group gathers twice a month (once during the day and once during the evening) to plan projects and learn new skills. They have over 40 knitters who range in age from 10 to over 80!

This dedicated group has been involved in numerous projects over the past two years. They have supported the women at the Woods Mullen Homeless Shelter in Boston by supplying them with 535 warm hats, cowls and scarves for the holidays. Over the past six months, they have made 95 “Snug as a Bug” sleep sacks for infants served by Cradles to Cradles in Boston, with another 25 ready to be delivered in the next few weeks. And they have recently partnered with Chloe Robertson, one of UCC Medfield’s middle school students, on her Silver Award for Girl Scouts. Chloe’s project is focused on prematurity awareness and giving members of our community ways to bring hope and joy to families with a baby in the NICU. She invited Knitting for Others to make hats and blankets for the babies in the NICU at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston. In May, Chloe delivered 122 hats and 10 blankets and was even able to distribute some of the items herself. It is the hope of Knitting for Others that the recipients of these handmade gifts will feel the warmth of God’s love.

On Sunday, June 2 Knitting for Others presented graduating high school seniors from UCC Medfield’s youth program with hand knitted scarves. This scarf is to remind them of how important they are to the UCC Medfield community.
