Letter to editor: RU District Warrant Articles #39-47

Our cars, TV's and phones have all been updated since the 1950's, now lets update our RU Zoning by-laws.

(This is a letter from RU District resident Eileen Murphy.)

Town Meeting Warrant Articles #39-47 directly affect construction in the Residential Urban District, specifically two-family and multi-family homes.

The Medfield zoning by-laws were written in the 1950s, back when Route 27 was a small country road and the center of Medfield was significantly less developed. They have not changed to meet modern development patterns or the Town’s needs. Zoning by-law changes will be voted on at Town Meeting and if approved, they will give the Planning Board tools to help manage development and limit the density of future construction projects in this small and historic section of our town.

I live in the RU District. I support all of these articles 100%!! I have been attending the Planning Board meetings since September 2016. My purpose in going to my first few meetings was to learn about our zoning by-laws and how as a resident of the RU, and more importantly a resident of Medfield, can be a part of the process to modify these by-laws. As it turns out, I discovered that our Planning Board had been working on making changes to our zoning by-laws for well over 15 months. The thought process and level of detail that the entire Planning Board along with the Historic Commission, By-Law Committee and the Zoning Board of Appeals is to be commended. The proposed changes are reasonable and well thought out. These changes will help to manage and control the impact on this historic area of the town from two-family and multi-family construction projects.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW: The RU district is the ONLY district in Medfield where you can build two-family and multi-family homes. Affordable housing, 40B, can be built anywhere.

Also know that all of the warrant articles are unanimously supported by the Warrant Committee.

The articles require a 2/3 vote at town meeting, the RU district needs the support of non-RU residents to help pass these articles!

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. There is a presentation I can send you that has significantly more details and photos demonstrating the impact on this historic section of Medfield.
