Honoring the Memory of Sgt. Daniel McCarthy on June 1st

In Medfield, on June 1st at noon, the dedication of a granite memorial monument will take place in front of the Public Safety Building honoring the service and memory of MPD Sgt. Daniel McCarthy.

McCarthy was killed in the line of duty on September 21, 2000 at the age of 38. He left his wife, Kim, and five young children who were forced to grow up without a father, Kasey (was 13 is now 31), Courtney (was 9 is now 28), Danny Jr. (was 7 is now 26), Kaylee (was 6 is now 25) and Patrick (was 2 is now 20).

McCarthy is the only Medfield officer killed in the line of duty in Medfield.

Although Sgt. McCarthy has been gone for almost 19 years, the idea of creating some sort of lasting memorial in his name has been in the minds of Deputy John Wilhelmi and McCarthy’s family for quite some time.

Shortly after the new Public Safety Building was built in 2016, Kim McCarthy, widow of Dan, approached then Chief Bob Meaney and Deputy Wilhelmi at the MPD expressing her thoughts that something should be done to honor her late husband and suggested this kind of memorial stone.

Both Meaney and Wilhelmi totally embraced this idea and Wilhelmi has been working with the Board of Selectmen and the DPW to make this happen. Funding left over from the building of the Public Safety Building was used . Officer Brienze worked with the monument company and the design was created and the stone was ordered. The placement of this memorial was determined in cooperation with Kim McCarthy and the Department of Public Works. The perfect spot was found in front of the Public Safety Building. This entire process took about one years time.

Sgt. McCarthy was also the DARE Officer in the Medfield Schools in 2000 and there is a small memorial stone in front of the Dale Street School in his honor. In 2000 when this tragedy happened, there was an outpouring of sadness in the community and throughout the schools, as Sgt. McCarthy was a beloved member of the Medfield Police Department. Currently there are five officers, one dispatcher and the department administrative assistant still on the MPD who worked with McCarthy back in 2000.

Even though Sgt. McCarthy has been gone for 19 years, the memory of him and his service to Medfield has not faded. Hopefully all those who didn’t know him, will recognize what a great public servant, father and husband he was when they notice this memorial in his honor as they drive down North Street.

All are welcome to attend this dedication ceremony on Saturday, June 1st at Noon.
