Medfield HS Class of 2020 to Graduate on July 25

After much planning and guideline creation, the MHS Class of 2020 will finally celebrate their high school graduation on Saturday, July 25th on the high school turf field.

MHS Principal, Robert Parga sent a letter to all the seniors and familes back in late June with many details stating “after having experienced a difficult spring, we are excited that we will have the opportunity to celebrate with the Class of 2020.”

To ensure a safe celebration for all graduates, guests and staff, both Dept of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and Medfield High School (MHS) guidelines must be met. Some guidelines are as follows:

  • Only graduates and their immediate family members are allowed to attend.
  • Each graduate will be allowed 3 guests, No Exceptions.
  • Four seats (graduate & 3 guests) will be arranged together on the turf, separated by 10 feet in all directions from the next graduate/guests
  • Graduates and guests will be provided with specific arrival times and parking locations and all graduates and guests must arrive in one vehicle (each graduate will be provided 1 ticket per vehicle).
  • All must wear face coverings before, during and after the ceremony (with medical condition exceptions).
  • Anyone refusing to wear a face covering without valid justification will be denied entry.
  • Speakers may remove masks during their remarks.
  • All graduates will walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. Traditional handshakes/hugs will not be permitted.
  • No communal gatherings before or after the graduation ceremony.
  • *The DESE guidelines also require schools to communicate to any graduate, their family, school personnel, and others who may attend that if they are feeling sick, are exhibiting any of the following symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, or new loss of taste or smell), or have potentially been exposed to someone with confirmed or suspected COVID-19, they should not attend the graduation ceremony. A potential exposure means having household contact or having close contact (within 6 feet) with an individual with confirmed COVID-19 for a prolonged period of time (15 minutes) while theperson is symptomatic or 48 hours before symptoms develop.*

Parga concluded his letter with, “This ceremony will look different, however the substance of our ceremony will remain in place. I recognize that limiting the guests is not ideal and forces families to make difficult decisions. Please know that this is needed in order for us to provide the students with the ceremony theyhave requested and deserve. Medfield TV will also broadcast the ceremony live for those who are not able to attend.”

Although the seniors in the Class of 2020 will be celebrating their graduation in a unique way, it will be a special day for everyone.
