MHS Clay Club Holds Fundraising Event for Food Cupboard
Last week the Medfield High School Clay Club, under the guidance of art teachers Sara Higger and Kate Jones, ran a fundraising event called “Empty Bowls".
Empty Bowls is an international project to fight hunger run by artisans on a community level, and Ms. Higger and Ms. Jones brought the concept to Medfield in order to raise money and awareness for the Medfield Food Cupboard.

The Empty Bowls fundraiser began several weeks ago with bowl-making at Medfield High School.
Participants were encouraged to come to the school and make a clay soup bowl. They returned a week later to glaze their pieces, and finally, last week, they gathered at Blake Middle School to enjoy a simple but delicious meal from their beautiful hand-made bowls. Participants who were unable to attend the earlier pottery sessions were able to choose a bowl made by local artisans.
After admiring the beautiful collection of colorful hand-made pottery, the attendees filled their bowls with soup generously donated by Medfield’s Basil Restaurant and Brothers Marketplace. Tasty desserts were provided by the high school’s Culinary Club. At the end of the meal theguests took their bowls home to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.

Seventy-five people participated in the dinner event, and $2,000 was raised to support the Food Cupboard. These donations will help feed the more than 70 households that rely on the Cupboard’s services.
“Empty Bowls filled our hearts with gratitude, and we want to especially thank Ms. Higger and Ms. Jones, the Clay Club, Basil Restaurant, Brothers Marketplace, the Culinary Club and the Medfield residents who supported this community-building event,” said Co-President Tracey Rogers.
“We rely completely on financial and food donations to support our mission,” continued Co-President Susan Gorog. “We deeply appreciate the generosity of our community, and we are so pleased that Ms. Higger and Ms. Jones plan to hold this event again next year.”
