A Medfield Historical Minute...

This "Medfield Historical Minute" is brought to you by town historian Richard DeSorgher.
A little something to read and learn to give you a little break during this time of boredom during isolation due to the Coronavirus Crisis. A different "Medfield Historical Minute" will appear each day during the Crisis.

"In 1939 A lightning bolt during a severe thunderstorm hit the roof of St. Edward Church and the neighboring rectory. The fire on the church gained headway because the Medfield Fire Department was equipped with only 60-foot ladders while the church roof was 75 feet above the ground. The Walpole Fire Apartment, which had longer ladders, was called to help extinguish the blaze. Damage was estimated at $2000. The bolt and accompanying loud thunder brought a crowd of several thousand people to the Main Street location of the church during the height of the storm."
