Prestigious Journalists Headline NEFAC Event at Medfield Library

With award-winning newspaper, broadcast and digital news journalists on board as participants, the New England First Amendment Coalition will present a discussion on journalism and government accountability from 2 to 3:45 p.m. on March 22 at the Medfield Public Library, 468 Main Street.

The Sunshine Week program is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by NEFAC, the Medfield Public Library, and the Zullo Gallery Center for the Arts.

The goal of Sunshine Week is to promote a dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information. Participants across the country include news media, civic groups, libraries, nonprofits, schools, and others interested in the public’s right to know.

TED DANIEL | Daniel is a general assignment and investigative reporter at Boston 25. He has been with the station for more than 15 years. He was previously a reporter with television stations in Providence, Tennessee, Florida, and Vermont.

DAVID FILIPOV | Filipov was The Washington Post bureau chief in Moscow, and previously reported for The Boston Globe. Filipov is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and is currently executive editor at News@Northeastern, a multi-platform digital news operation at Northeastern University.

TOM MELVILLE | Melville is the executive news director at WBUR, where he has worked for nearly 10 years. He was formerly news director at New England Cable News, after rising through the ranks as chief political reporter, executive producer and assistant news director.

TOM MULVOY | Mulvoy is the associate editor of the Dorchester Reporter, an affiliate of Boston Neighborhood News, Inc., and the former, long-time managing editor of The Boston Globe. Mulvoy enjoyed a 35-year career with The Boston Globe during a time of rapid expansion and prestigious recognition.

EMILY SWEENEY | Sweeney covers local news and writes the “Blotter Tales” column for The Boston Globe. She has been on The Boston Globe staff since 2001, and currently serves on the board of directors for the New England First Amendment Coalition and the New England Society of News Editors.

NEFAC was formed in 2006 to advance and protect the Five Freedoms of the First Amendment, including the principle of the public’s right to know. It is a broad-based organization of people who believe in the power of an informed democratic society. Members include lawyers, journalists, historians, academics and private citizens.
