Sixth Week - Thursday's "Medfield Historical Minute"
A little something to read and learn to give you a little break during this time of boredom during isolation due to the Coronavirus Crisis.

A Medfield Historical Minute...
This "Medfield Historical Minute" is brought to you by town historian Richard DeSorgher.
A little something to read and learn to give you a little break during this time of boredom during isolation due to the Coronavirus Crisis. A different "Medfield Historical Minute" will appear each day during the Crisis.
"In 1941 Myrtle Chick, a standout athlete, was a junior at Medfield High School. She reported to football practice at the start of the school year to try out for quarterback. Although clearly the better of the quarterbacks trying out, she was denied permission to play on the team because she was a female. When she tried out, the male players threatened to quit if she made the team. Coach Jack Welch told her “girls could not play football and instead should stick to knitting.” Chick appealed the coach’s ruling to headmaster Alton Hartford, who declined to overrule the coach. Myrtle Chick was also standout on both the girls’ basketball and softball teams but was never permitted to show off her football skills."
