A Medfield Historical Minute...

This "Medfield Historical Minute" is brought to you by town historian Richard DeSorgher.
A little something to read and learn to give you a little break during this time of boredom during isolation due to the Coronavirus Crisis. A different "Medfield Historical Minute" will appear each day during the Crisis.

"In 1887 Medfield put in its first water hydrants in town for fire protection. By using the steam pump at the Excelsior Straw Works (63 North Street/Montrose School) and attaching hose to the hydrant located in the front yard of the straw hat works, a stream of water could easily be thrown upon the factory’s roof. The same process was used to protect the three churches in Medfield Center, (the Baptist Church, the Second Congregational Church (UCC Church) and the First Parish Church) and the business center. The churches were reached by attaching 750 feet of hose. The installation of piping and three hydrants gave the Center area of the village fire protection."
