Twenty-first Week, Saturday's "Medfield Historical Minute"
A little something to read and learn to give you a little break during this time of boredom during isolation due to the Coronavirus Crisis.

A Medfield Historical Minute...
This "Medfield Historical Minute" is brought to you by town historian Richard DeSorgher.
A little something to read and learn to give you a little break during this time of boredom during isolation due to the Coronavirus Crisis. A different "Medfield Historical Minute" will appear each day during the Crisis.
"In 2010 a special re-dedication of McCarthy Park, located up the north end of town, opposite the former state hospital took place. The park was named in honor and memory of William E. McCarthy, always known as Bill. McCarthy became a pilot during World War II. His plane was shot down over the Pacific and for three days he lay adrift in a small raft before being rescued by a US submarine. After the war he returned to his hometown of Medfield and was elected selectman, where he served with distinction from 1946-1955. In 1955 he was appointed Superintendent of Streets, a position he held for 25 years. He was one of the most knowledgeable individuals on Medfield history. He was also instrumental in obtaining the property from the state, known as McCarthy Park, that has now become such a valuable recreational area for the town. Bill McCarthy died in 1981 and the park off Hospital Road continues to let people know who he was and about the power of what one person can do to make a difference."
