Twenty-first Week, Tuesday's "Medfield Historical Minute"
A little something to read and learn to give you a little break during this time of boredom during isolation due to the Coronavirus Crisis.

A Medfield Historical Minute...
This "Medfield Historical Minute" is brought to you by town historian Richard DeSorgher.
A little something to read and learn to give you a little break during this time of boredom during isolation due to the Coronavirus Crisis. A different "Medfield Historical Minute" will appear each day during the Crisis.
"In 1879 the Overseers of the Poor in charge of maintaining the Poor Farm (Almshouse) in the area of Bridge and West Streets reported that “We have labored under great disadvantage during the past year. We have been obliged to buy two horses, a harness, mowing-machine and some new stoves. This has made the expenses greater than in previous years. We were forced to discharge the keeper of the almshouse, as he was not doing any work at all. The crops have not proved as good as they would, had they been taken care of properly. The corn crop was the poorest in years. The number of tramps has decreased more than one-half since last year. During the year 323 tramps were provided for and three paupers lived at the Poor Farm, Herbert Kingsbury, age 34, Silas Allen, age 85 and Arthur Bailey, age 25.”
