Medford Park Reopens After Multi-year Renovation Project

MEDFORD, MA — A multi-year effort to renovate Carr Park is officially complete.

Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn announced the opening of the renovated park this week, marking the culmination of a multi-phase project that added new recreational amenities, accessibility improvements, and climate resiliency features to the South Medford space.

The project was completed in phases over the past several years. Earlier work included reconstruction of baseball fields, installation of pickleball courts and construction of an accessible loop path around the park.

The final phase added a splash pad, playground, dog park, mini skatepark, adult fitness area, picnic spaces and upgraded basketball courts. One of the courts is covered by a solar-powered pavilion designed to provide shade while generating renewable energy.

Lungo-Koehn said federal funding secured with the support of U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark helped make the solar installation and other climate resiliency upgrades possible.

The mayor thanked city staff, community volunteers, consultants and advocates who contributed to the project, including Staff Planner for Parks and Open Space Amanda Centrella, Director of Planning, Development and Sustainability Alicia Hunt, Recreation Director Kevin Bailey, Park Foreman Ugo Fiorenzio, members of the Community Preservation Act Committee and Parks Commission, design firm CBA, contractor Quirk and accessibility advocate Chenine Peloquin.

"It's a truly remarkable public space that will be enjoyed for generations to come," Lungo-Koehn said in an announcement.

The Carr Park renovation was funded through a combination of local, state and federal sources, including Community Preservation Act funding, Land and Water Conservation Fund grants, American Rescue Plan Act funding and federal energy funding.

Residents can now use all of the park's new amenities as the summer season begins.
